Decentralized exchanges run on blockchain-based smart contracts, enabling peer-to-peer trades without a single custodian, with liquidity provided by participants and automated market-making mechanisms in some cases.

Common services include spot trading across multiple trading pairs, withdrawal and deposit options, and often additional products such as derivatives, staking, and lending. Many platforms offer API access for algorithmic trading and integration with external wallets. Liquidity, or the ease of executing large orders without significant price impact, is a key factor in exchange quality and price discovery.

Fees and regulatory requirements vary by platform and jurisdiction. Most exchanges charge trading fees and withdrawal fees, with fee structures ranging from maker-taker models to flat rates. KYC (know-your-customer) and AML (anti-money laundering) procedures are common, especially on centralized platforms, and regulatory oversight differs across countries, including licensing, reporting, and consumer protections.

Security and risk are central considerations. Exchanges implement security measures such as cold storage, two-factor authentication, multisignature wallets, withdrawal whitelists, and insurance where available. Users must assess custody preferences, liquidity, available assets, security records, and customer support when choosing an exchange.
