Crosstradition is a term used in cultural studies and related disciplines to describe the phenomenon or practice of combining elements from multiple cultural traditions across time and locality. It can denote (1) the practice of creating new hybrid forms—such as music, cuisine, ritual, or visual arts—that draw on motifs, techniques, or symbols from two or more traditions; or (2) an analytical approach that studies how traditions interact, negotiate difference, and transform under contact. The term emphasizes cross-cultural dialogue and emergent hybridity rather than simple assimilation or blending.

The concept emerged in the context of globalization, transnational networks, and digital media, where knowledge, goods, and practices circulate widely. It is related to but distinct from syncretism and transculturation, foregrounding ongoing negotiation rather than static synthesis. Common features include deliberate borrowing, layering of historical meanings, recontextualization of symbols, and attention to power relations, lineage, and authenticity.

Applications can be found in world music collaborations, fusion cuisine, multi-tradition ceremonies, and contemporary art and architecture that deliberately fuse motifs from diverse traditions. Analysts examine motivations, audiences, and reception, as well as the risks of cultural appropriation, stereotyping, or erasure when traditions are deployed outside their original contexts. Proponents argue that crosstradition fosters intercultural understanding, innovation, and plural identities; critics caution against commodification or misrepresentation.
