Historically, cross-dressing appears in many cultures: theatrical traditions (such as ancient Greek drama, Shakespearean theater, kabuki, and Elizabethan stage), religious and ritual practices, and as part of social protest or disguise. In modern times, it includes everyday gender expression, cabaret and drag performance, and elements of fashion and cosplay.

Motivations for cross-dressing vary widely and can include gender expression, aesthetic preference, theatrical performance, exploration of identity, or fetishistic reasons. Cross-dressing is distinct from transgender identity; while some transgender people may cross-dress, cross-dressing itself does not necessarily indicate a persistent gender identity different from assigned sex.

Social and legal responses to cross-dressing have ranged from acceptance to discrimination, depending on cultural norms and historical period. Contemporary attitudes in many societies are becoming more tolerant, with increased visibility in media and discussions about gender diversity.
