Cotton spinning is the process of transforming raw cotton fibers into yarn or thread. This ancient craft has evolved significantly over millennia, from simple hand-powered methods to sophisticated automated machinery. The primary goal of spinning is to twist fibers together, creating a cohesive and continuous strand strong enough for weaving or knitting.

Historically, spinning was done using a spindle and whorl, a handheld tool that twisted the fibers. Later, the spinning wheel, introduced around the 14th century in Europe, revolutionized production by allowing a single spinner to create yarn much faster. The Industrial Revolution brought about even more drastic changes with the invention of machines like the water frame, the spinning jenny, and the mule. Modern cotton spinning typically involves several stages. First, the raw cotton is cleaned and carded to align the fibers into a fluffy strand called a sliver. This sliver is then drawn, a process that thins and further aligns the fibers. Finally, the sliver is spun into yarn, where twist is imparted to give it strength. Different spinning methods, such as ring spinning and open-end spinning, produce yarns with varying characteristics and strengths suitable for different applications.
