This field often blended astronomy with geography and cartography, reflecting a time when the distinction between the heavens and the Earth was less rigidly defined in scientific inquiry.

The practice of cosmography predates modern astronomy and cosmology as distinct disciplines. Early cosmographers sought to create a comprehensive understanding of the cosmos, including its physical structure, its inhabitants, and humanity's place within it. Their work often involved observation, mathematics, and the compilation of existing knowledge. In contemporary scientific contexts, the term "cosmographer" is rarely used. Modern science has divided the study of the universe into specialized fields like cosmology (the study of the universe's origin, evolution, and large-scale structure), astronomy (the study of celestial objects and phenomena), and cartography (the science and art of map-making). While the spirit of comprehensively understanding and depicting the universe persists, the methods and the academic structure have evolved significantly, leading to the obsolescence of the singular role of the cosmographer.
