Conventionen is the plural form of convention in several Dutch- and German-speaking contexts, and more broadly it is used in many languages to denote conventions—patterns of accepted practice or formal agreements that organize behavior. A convention can be a social norm that smooths interaction, a treaty or protocol among states, or a standard for how something should be written, measured, or configured.

Conventions arise in different realms. Social conventions govern everyday behavior, such as greetings, politeness, or the order in which people queue. International conventions are formal agreements or treaties that regulate relations between states, including rules of armed conflict, trade, and diplomacy. Linguistic and notational conventions set agreed-upon spellings, punctuation, symbols, or notation systems used by communities of speakers or scientists. Technical conventions appear in fields like programming, where coding styles and interface standards promote readability and interoperability, or in science where units and nomenclature follow shared conventions.

Enforcement and change also differ. Some conventions are informal and rely on voluntary compliance and social sanctions, while others are legally binding and subject to enforcement mechanisms. Conventions can evolve through negotiation, institutional reform, or gradual drift as preferences and technologies change. They help reduce ambiguity, coordinate action, and create predictability in complex social systems.
