A Contingentista refers to a member or supporter of the Federalist movement in Brazil during the early 20th century, specifically associated with the War of the Contestado (Guerra do Contestado). This conflict, which took place between 1912 and 1916, primarily in the Brazilian states of Paraná and Santa Catarina, involved a complex mix of social, economic, religious, and political grievances. The Contingentistas were a diverse group, often comprising impoverished rural workers, small farmers, and religious devotees who felt marginalized and exploited by the federal government and large landowners.

The movement's origins are rooted in land disputes, the establishment of a powerful foreign company, the Brazil Railway Company, which led to land confiscation and displacement of local populations, and the influence of messianic religious leaders like José Maria. These leaders inspired a fervent following among the disenfranchised, promising a better future and a more just society. The term "Contingentista" itself derives from "Contestado," meaning "contested" or "disputed," referring to the contested territory where the war took place.

The Contingentistas engaged in armed struggle against federal and state forces, characterized by guerrilla warfare and strong religious motivations.
