Constellationsgroups refers to the traditional division of the celestial sphere into distinct regions, each associated with a recognizable pattern of stars. Historically, these patterns were often interpreted as mythological figures, animals, or inanimate objects. Ancient civilizations across the globe developed their own systems of constellations, reflecting their cultural beliefs and observations of the night sky.

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) currently recognizes 88 official constellations. These official constellations are not merely the star patterns themselves but rather defined areas of the sky, encompassing all stars and celestial objects within their boundaries. This standardization ensures that every point in the sky belongs to exactly one constellation, facilitating astronomical cataloging and communication.

The constellations we use today are largely based on the tradition of Greco-Roman astronomy, particularly as codified by Ptolemy in his Almagest.
