Conditieindex is a Dutch term for a composite indicator that summarizes the current state or quality of a system, asset, or environment by aggregating multiple measured indicators. The concept is used in fields such as asset management, infrastructure maintenance, environmental monitoring, and housing to provide a single, comparable score of condition.

Construction and interpretation: To build a conditieindex, a set of indicators that reflect condition (for example structural integrity, wear, performance, safety, and efficiency) is selected. Each indicator is normalized to a common scale and assigned a weight reflecting its importance. The normalized indicators are then combined, typically via a sum or weighted average, to produce one score. Conventionally a higher score may indicate better condition, but some indices use the opposite convention; the intended interpretation should be stated in each context.

Applications and examples: In infrastructure and civil engineering, pavement condition index (PCI) and facility condition index (FCI) are well-known examples that translate distress or performance data into a single rating. In environmental and housing contexts, condition indices may summarize ecosystem health or dwelling quality to prioritize maintenance or investments.

Advantages and limitations: Conditieindices offer a compact, comparable metric that supports inspections, budgeting, and prioritization. They also risk oversimplification if important nuances are hidden in aggregation, depend on the choice and quality of indicators, and require regular validation and recalibration to remain meaningful.
