compartid

Compartid is the second-person plural imperative form of the Spanish verb compartir, meaning to share. It is used to give a direct command to a group of people addressed informally (vosotros). This form is standard in Spain and in regions or contexts where the vosotros form is maintained.

Formation and usage. For the verb compartir, the vosotros imperative is formed by adding the ending -id to the stem compart-: compartid. The corresponding negative imperative is no compartáis. The parallel forms for the ustedes (formal or plural) are compartan (affirmative) and no compartan (negative).

Examples include: Compartid las tareas entre todos. No compartáis información confidencial. In regions that use ustedes instead of vosotros, the common equivalents are Compartan las tareas entre todos and No compartan información confidencial.

Pronouns and variants. When attaching direct or indirect object pronouns to an affirmative vosotros command, forms such as Compartidlo or Compartidla are possible, following standard Spanish pronoun placement rules for commands.

Regional notes. Compartid is primarily used in Spain, where the vosotros form is standard. In most of Latin America, where ustedes is the default second-person plural, comparta(n) is used instead of compartid.

Etymology. Compartid comes from the verb compartir, which derives from the prefix com- (together) and partir (to divide), ultimately from Latin parts, partit-.
