Commensurities are a concept in evolutionary biology describing shared characteristics that arise independently in different lineages due to similar environmental pressures or functional requirements, rather than due to shared ancestry. This phenomenon is also known as convergent evolution. When unrelated species evolve similar traits, such as the streamlined body shape of a shark and a dolphin, or the wings of a bird and a bat, these are examples of commensurities.
