A colourimeter is an optical instrument used to measure and quantify colour in various materials, primarily by determining the reflectance or transmittance of light at specific wavelengths. These devices are widely employed in industries such as printing, textiles, plastics, paints, and cosmetics to ensure consistent colour quality and adherence to standards. Colourimeters operate on the principle of spectrophotometry, where light is passed through or reflected off a sample, and the resulting spectrum is analysed to derive colour values.

The most common colour measurement systems used by colourimeters are based on the CIE (Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage) 1931 or 1964 colour space models, which define colour in terms of three primary coordinates: X, Y, and Z. These values are then converted into more intuitive colour descriptors such as L*a*b*, where L* represents lightness, and a* and b* denote the colour coordinates on a green-red and blue-yellow axis, respectively. Some advanced colourimeters also incorporate spectral data, providing a full wavelength-by-wavelength analysis for more precise applications.

Colourimeters differ from spectrophotometers in that they typically measure colour at fewer, predefined wavelengths rather than across a continuous spectrum. This makes them faster and more cost-effective for routine quality control, though less precise for complex colour matching tasks. They are often portable, handheld devices designed for on-site inspections, though benchtop models with higher accuracy are also available.

Applications of colourimeters include monitoring ink consistency in printing, ensuring uniform dyeing in textiles, verifying paint formulations, and checking the colour stability of plastics and cosmetics. In food and pharmaceutical industries, they help maintain product appearance and consistency. Calibration against known standards and proper sample preparation are essential to ensure accurate and reliable measurements.
