Colorfilm refers to a type of photographic film that is capable of capturing and reproducing images in color. Unlike black-and-white film, which records only variations in light intensity, color film uses a complex layering system to record different wavelengths of light.

The fundamental principle behind most color films is the use of multiple emulsion layers, each sensitive to a different primary color of light: blue, green, and red. When light strikes the film, these layers react differently. During the development process, dyes are formed within these layers that correspond to the complementary colors of the light that exposed them. For example, the blue-sensitive layer will form a yellow dye, the green-sensitive layer will form a magenta dye, and the red-sensitive layer will form a cyan dye. When viewed together, these dyes recreate a full-color image.

Early color photographic processes were complex and often involved multiple exposures or specialized equipment. However, the development of subtractive color film in the early to mid-20th century, most notably Kodachrome and Agfacolor, revolutionized the field, making color photography accessible to amateurs and professionals alike. These films became the standard for capturing the world in vibrant hues for decades. While digital photography has largely supplanted film, color film remains a significant medium for artistic expression and archival purposes, valued for its unique aesthetic qualities and historical importance.
