The coccygeus muscle, also known as the levator coccygis, is a small, triangular muscle located in the pelvic floor. It is one of the muscles that form the pelvic diaphragm, a muscular structure that supports the pelvic organs. The coccygeus muscle originates from the ischial spine and the sacrospinous ligament and inserts onto the sides of the coccyx, the final section of the vertebral column, commonly referred to as the tailbone.

This muscle plays a role in supporting the pelvic organs, including the bladder, intestines, and uterus in females. It also contributes to the movement of the coccyx, particularly during defecation and childbirth. The coccygeus muscle works in conjunction with other pelvic floor muscles, such as the levator ani, to maintain continence and provide stability to the pelvic region.
