Climate biology is an interdisciplinary field that investigates how climate influences living organisms and, in turn, how biological processes affect climate dynamics. It brings together biology, ecology, physiology, climatology, and earth-system science to understand the responses of organisms and ecosystems to climate variables and to project future impacts under changing climate conditions.

Researchers examine physiological responses to temperature and water availability, phenology shifts, species distributions, ecosystem productivity, carbon and nitrogen cycles, and feedbacks between biosphere and atmosphere. The field covers short-term acclimation and long-term adaptation, population dynamics, community interactions, and paleoclimate biology where past climate states inform present sensitivity.

Methodologies include controlled experiments, field observations, long-term monitoring, remote sensing, and data synthesis. Modeling approaches include process-based ecosystem models, species distribution modeling, and coupled climate–biogeochemical models. Data sources span meteorological records, ecological surveys, and paleobotanical and isotopic proxies.

Applications include forecasting biodiversity responses, informing conservation planning, agricultural adaptation, and assessment of climate-related risks to ecosystem services. Challenges include integrating data across scales, attributing causality amid multiple stressors, dealing with uncertainties, and reconciling different disciplinary conventions.

Climate biology remains a rapidly evolving field as climate change accelerates, highlighting the links between environmental conditions and biological systems and emphasizing the role of biology in feedbacks within the Earth system.
