Claudication refers to pain or discomfort in a limb, most commonly the legs, that occurs during physical activity and is relieved by rest. This pain is typically caused by insufficient blood flow to the muscles, a condition known as peripheral artery disease (PAD). When PAD affects the arteries in the legs, the muscles do not receive enough oxygenated blood during exercise, leading to cramping or aching. The severity of the claudication pain can vary from mild discomfort to debilitating pain that forces the individual to stop walking.

The most common symptom of claudication is leg pain that starts while walking and subsides within a few minutes of stopping. This pain can be felt in the calf, thigh, or buttock, depending on the location of the arterial blockage. Other symptoms may include weakness, fatigue, or cramping in the affected leg. In some cases, individuals may also experience numbness or coldness in the limb.

Diagnosis of claudication usually involves a physical examination, a review of medical history, and specific tests to assess blood flow to the legs. These tests may include an ankle-brachial index (ABI), which compares blood pressure in the ankle to that in the arm, or Doppler ultrasound to visualize blood flow in the arteries. Treatment for claudication focuses on managing underlying PAD and alleviating symptoms. This often involves lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, smoking cessation, and a healthy diet. Medications may be prescribed to improve blood flow, reduce cholesterol, or prevent blood clots. In severe cases, surgical procedures or angioplasty may be necessary to restore adequate blood flow.
