citreoviridis
Citreoviridis is a species of fungus belonging to the genus Penicillium. It is known for its distinctive yellow-green conidia, which give it its name. This mold is commonly found in soil, decaying plant material, and on food products. Historically, it gained attention due to its association with certain types of food poisoning, particularly in areas where it contaminated rice. Ingestion of citreoviridis contaminated food can lead to a condition known as yellow rice poisoning, characterized by neurological symptoms such as tremors, ataxia, and paralysis. The toxic compound produced by citreoviridis is known as citreoviridin. While the incidence of yellow rice poisoning has decreased significantly due to improved food storage and handling practices, the fungus remains a subject of study for its mycotoxin production and ecological role. Research continues to explore its biochemical pathways and potential biotechnological applications, though its primary significance remains linked to its toxic potential.
