Citoszkeletonon is a term used in some sources to refer to the cytoskeleton, the dynamic network of protein filaments that fills the cytoplasm of most eukaryotic cells. It provides structural support, organizes cellular components, and enables movement at the cellular and subcellular levels.

The cytoskeleton comprises three main filament systems: microfilaments (actin filaments), intermediate filaments, and microtubules. Each filament type is regulated by a set of associated proteins that control polymerization, crosslinking, and interactions with membranes and motor proteins. The networks are highly dynamic, allowing rapid remodeling in response to signals.

Functions of the cytoskeleton include maintaining cell shape, enabling cell migration, and guiding the distribution and transport of organelles and vesicles. It also plays a central role in cell division, forming the mitotic spindle and contractile structures that divide cells.

Dynamics and regulation are driven by energy-dependent motor proteins such as myosin, kinesin, and dynein, which move along actin filaments and microtubules to transport cargo or generate force. Filament turnover, nucleation, and severing regulate assembly, with microtubules exhibiting dynamic instability and actin networks showing treadmilling behaviors in different contexts.

Clinically and scientifically, cytoskeletal integrity is essential for tissue organization and development. Disruptions can contribute to diseases, including cancer metastasis, neurodegenerative disorders, and inherited cytoskeletal diseases. In research, the cytoskeleton is studied as a key determinant of cell mechanics and as a target for therapeutic intervention.
