The cinématographe was an early motion picture device invented by the Lumière brothers, Auguste and Louis. The cinématographe used a celluloid film strip with perforations along the edges, which were engaged by a mechanism that allowed the film to be advanced intermittently. This breakthrough allowed for the capture and projection of a sequence of still images that, when played back rapidly, created the illusion of motion. The first public exhibition of films made with the cinématographe took place on December 28, 1895, at the Salon Indien du Grand Café in Paris.

The Lumière brothers' invention is considered a pivotal moment in the history of cinema.
