The cimbalom is a type of chordophone, specifically a hammered dulcimer, that originated in Hungary. It is characterized by a large, trapezoidal, shallow box zither with a soundboard and a dampening mechanism. Strings are stretched across the soundboard and struck with small, felt-covered hammers. The cimbalom is played by a seated musician who holds the hammers in each hand and strikes the strings. Its rich, resonant tone can range from percussive to lyrical.
