Chrupavkou is a Czech term that translates to cartilage in English. Cartilage is a flexible connective tissue found in many areas of the body, including the joints between bones, the ear, the nose, and the respiratory tract. It is composed of specialized cells called chondrocytes, which produce and maintain a matrix of collagen and other proteins.

There are three main types of cartilage in the human body: hyaline cartilage, elastic cartilage, and fibrocartilage. Hyaline cartilage is the most common type and is found in the joints, ribs, nose, and trachea. It provides a smooth, low-friction surface for joint movement and supports various structures. Elastic cartilage, found in the ear and epiglottis, contains elastic fibers that allow it to bend and return to its original shape. Fibrocartilage, present in the intervertebral discs and menisci of the knee, is the strongest type and provides shock absorption and durability.

Cartilage plays a crucial role in supporting the body, allowing for movement, and cushioning bones. Unlike bone, cartilage does not contain blood vessels, which means it heals very slowly when damaged. Injuries to cartilage, such as those sustained in sports or due to aging, can lead to conditions like osteoarthritis, characterized by pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Treatment for cartilage damage can range from physical therapy and pain management to surgical interventions like arthroscopy or cartilage repair procedures.
