Chromiittimineraalit refers to a group of minerals that are chemically classified as spinels, with the general formula AB2O4 where A represents a divalent cation and B represents a trivalent cation. The most common and economically important member of this group is chromite, which has the specific formula FeCr2O4. Chromite is a black, opaque mineral with a metallic luster and a Mohs hardness of about 5.5. It is typically found in mafic and ultramafic igneous rocks, such as gabbro, peridotite, and serpentinite.

Chromite is the primary ore of chromium, a vital industrial metal. Chromium is used extensively in the production of stainless steel, alloys, plating, and as a pigment.
