Ceruminös refers to a glandular tissue or secretion that produces or contains cerumen. Cerumen, commonly known as earwax, is a yellowish, waxy substance secreted by glands in the external ear canal. These glands, specifically the ceruminous glands and sebaceous glands, are responsible for its production. The composition of cerumen includes shed skin cells, hair, and secretions from these glands.

The primary function of cerumen is protective. It lubricates the ear canal, traps dust, foreign particles, and microorganisms, preventing them from reaching the eardrum. It also possesses antibacterial and antifungal properties, further safeguarding the ear. The accumulation of cerumen is a natural process, and the ear typically cleans itself through the outward migration of skin cells and the wax.

However, an excessive buildup of cerumen, known as cerumen impaction, can occur. This can lead to symptoms such as hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), dizziness, and discomfort. Cerumen impaction can result from various factors, including the natural structure of the ear canal, the use of cotton swabs, or the overproduction of cerumen by the ceruminous glands. Medical professionals can diagnose and treat cerumen impaction through methods like ear irrigation or manual removal.
