Centromerer is a rarely used term that may appear as a misspelling or variant spelling of centromere in some texts. The standard term in genetics is centromere, the chromosomal locus essential for proper chromosome segregation during cell division. Centromeres are not defined strictly by DNA sequence but by epigenetic features; their position varies among chromosomes and species. In many eukaryotes they are regional centromeres, spanning large chromosomal regions with repetitive DNA; in a subset of organisms, point centromeres are defined by a small DNA segment. Some species have holocentric chromosomes in which spindle attachment occurs along nearly the entire length of the chromosome.
