Centerfire is a type of metallic cartridge used in firearms. Unlike rimfire cartridges, the primer is located in the center of the cartridge's base. This central position for the primer makes centerfire cartridges generally more reliable and suitable for higher pressure loads than rimfire ammunition. The primer cup contains a small amount of sensitive explosive material, which is ignited by the firing pin striking it. This ignition then detonates the main propellant charge within the cartridge case, propelling the projectile. Centerfire ammunition is commonly used in a wide variety of firearms, including rifles, pistols, and shotguns, and is available in numerous calibers. Its robust design and the ability to handle greater pressures contribute to its widespread adoption for hunting, sport shooting, and military applications. The central priming system also allows for easier and more consistent reloading of spent casings.
