centerboarden
Centerboarden, commonly referred to as centerboards, are retractable keels used on certain sailboats to provide lateral resistance while allowing reduced draft. A centerboard is mounted along the boat’s centerline and can be lowered into or raised from a trunk or housing in the hull. Depending on the design, the board may pivot or slide vertically within the trunk and is typically secured in position with a pin, line, or locking mechanism.
When lowered, the centerboard increases sideways resistance, improving stability and upwind performance by reducing leeway. When
Centerboards are common on smaller sailboats, including dinghies and trailerable cruisers, as well as some multihulls.
Advantages of centerboards include the ability to operate in shallow waters and to adapt draft to conditions.
