Cell specialization, also known as cell differentiation, is the process by which a less specialized cell becomes a more specialized cell type. This process occurs multiple times during the development of a multicellular organism as the organism changes from a simple zygote to a complex system of tissues and cell types. Differentiation is a common process in adults too, for example, adult stem cells dividing and creating fully differentiated daughter cells during tissue repair and some other natural processes.

During cell differentiation, cells change shape, size, and metabolic activity. They become more specific in their structure and function. For example, a muscle cell becomes elongated and develops the ability to contract, while a nerve cell develops a long axon to transmit electrical signals. This specialization is driven by changes in gene expression. While all cells in an organism contain the same genetic material, only certain genes are activated or silenced in each cell type, leading to the unique characteristics and functions of that cell.

The ability of cells to differentiate is crucial for the development and maintenance of complex life forms. It allows for the division of labor within an organism, with different cell types performing specific tasks that contribute to the overall survival and function of the organism.
