cefamandoles

Cefamandole is a semi-synthetic, broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic of the second generation. It is administered intravenously or intramuscularly and is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. Cefamandole is effective against many Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including staphylococci, streptococci, E. coli, and Klebsiella species. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell death.

Cefamandole is typically used for moderate to severe infections such as pneumonia, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and bone and joint infections. It may also be used prophylactically before surgery to prevent infection. The drug's spectrum of activity makes it a valuable option for empiric therapy when the causative organism is not yet identified.

Common side effects of cefamandole include pain and inflammation at the injection site, gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea and vomiting, and allergic reactions ranging from rash to anaphylaxis. More serious side effects can include changes in blood cell counts, liver enzyme abnormalities, and, notably, a disulfiram-like reaction when combined with alcohol. Due to its potential for causing bleeding problems, particularly hypoprothrombinemia, patients may require monitoring of their coagulation status and, in some cases, vitamin K supplementation. Cefamandole is generally not the first-line treatment and is often reserved for situations where its specific spectrum or properties are advantageous.
