Caseinbased refers to materials and products derived from casein, the phosphoprotein found in milk. Casein is obtained by precipitating milk proteins and then processing the resulting curd into powders, pastes, or films. When combined with certain additives, the protein forms binders, films, or plastics that can be shaped or hardened for different applications.

In adhesives and coatings, casein acts as a natural binder. Casein-based glues and pastes were traditionally used in woodworking, bookbinding, wallpaper, and paper production, valued for quick setting and strong initial bonding. When cross-linked with additives such as lime or borax, casein can become more water-resistant and durable, expanding its utility. Casein paints have also been used by artists for their creamy textures and fast drying times, though they can be sensitive to humidity and aging.

Casein-based plastics, developed in the early 20th century, were used for buttons, jewelry, coatings, and other small items. These bioplastics rely on the coagulated protein matrix and cross-linking agents to form hard, rigid materials. They declined in popularity with the rise of synthetic polymers but are sometimes revisited in discussions of bio-based or heritage materials.

Industrial and contemporary uses include eco-friendly binders for paper and packaging coatings, as well as research into casein-based hydrogels and films for biomedical applications. As a dairy-derived protein, casein offers a renewable, biodegradable option but can present challenges related to moisture sensitivity and allergenicity.
