Cartilageoriginating is an adjective that describes structures, cells, proteins, or diseases that arise from or are derived from cartilage tissue. Cartilage is a flexible connective tissue that forms during embryonic development from mesenchymal stem cells. These progenitor cells differentiate into chondroblasts, which then mature into chondrocytes that occupy lacunae within the cartilaginous matrix. Cartilageoriginating terminology is often used in developmental biology and pathology to specify the embryological source of a tissue or lesion.

In normal development, cartilageoriginating cells contribute to the formation of the hyaline cartilage of the nose, larynx, trachea, and most bony endplates of the vertebral column. During endochondral ossification, cartilageoriginating cells undergo apoptosis and are replaced by bone; however, in certain pathological conditions such as enchondromas and osteochondromas, remnants of cartilageoriginating tissue persist abnormally.

Genetic studies have identified mutations in genes that control cartilage origin and differentiation, including SOX9, COL2A1, and ACAN. These mutations can lead to cartilageoriginating disorders such as campomelic dysplasia, Stickler syndrome, and spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia. In addition, the term cartilageoriginating can describe fibroblasts that have undergone ossification, or chondrosarcomas that maintain a cartilaginous phenotype.

In research, cartilageoriginating stem cells are exploited for regenerative therapies. Mesenchymal stem cells isolated from bone marrow or adipose tissue are induced to become cartilageoriginating chondrocytes in vitro, providing a source for repairing articular cartilage injuries.
