The carotid sinus is a slight widening of the internal carotid artery at its origin from the common carotid artery. It is a sensory organ that plays a crucial role in the regulation of blood pressure. Located in the neck, near the point where the common carotid artery bifurcates into the internal and external carotid arteries, the carotid sinus is richly supplied with baroreceptors. These specialized nerve endings are sensitive to changes in arterial blood pressure.

When blood pressure rises, the stretching of the carotid sinus wall stimulates these baroreceptors. The signals are then transmitted via the glossopharyngeal nerve to the brainstem, specifically to the cardiovascular centers. In response, the brainstem initiates mechanisms to lower blood pressure, such as slowing the heart rate and dilating blood vessels. Conversely, a drop in blood pressure leads to decreased stimulation of the baroreceptors, prompting the brainstem to increase heart rate and constrict blood vessels to raise blood pressure. This reflex, known as the baroreflex, is a vital homeostatic mechanism that helps maintain stable blood pressure within the body. Issues with the carotid sinus or its associated nerves can lead to conditions like carotid sinus hypersensitivity, which can cause dizziness, fainting, or even blackouts in response to pressure on the neck.
