Carburetorbased refers to systems or devices that utilize a carburetor as their primary mechanism for fuel delivery. A carburetor is a mechanical device that mixes air and fuel in the correct ratio for combustion in an internal combustion engine. It achieves this by drawing fuel from a fuel tank and atomizing it into a fine spray as it passes through a controlled airflow. This air-fuel mixture is then fed into the engine's cylinders.

Engines that are carburetorbased rely on the physical properties of airflow and vacuum to operate. As the engine's pistons move down, they create a low-pressure area (vacuum) within the intake manifold. This vacuum pulls air through the carburetor's venturi, a narrowed section. The increased air velocity in the venturi creates a further drop in pressure, which draws fuel through a jet and into the airstream. The amount of fuel drawn is regulated by the size of the jet and the throttle valve, which controls the overall airflow.

While once ubiquitous in gasoline engines, carburetorbased systems have largely been superseded by more modern fuel injection technology. Fuel injection systems offer greater precision in fuel delivery, leading to improved fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and better engine performance across a wider range of operating conditions. However, carburetors remain in use in certain applications, such as small engines found in lawnmowers and motorcycles, older vehicles, and in some specialized racing applications where their simplicity and cost-effectiveness are advantageous. The operation of a carburetorbased system is generally simpler to understand and repair than fuel injection systems, contributing to their continued presence in some markets.
