Caprocklagen is a geological term describing a caprock layer, the resistant upper seal that caps a sedimentary sequence. It typically forms the impermeable or low-permeability boundary that traps hydrocarbons and confines groundwater beneath it. The caprock can be composed of cemented sandstone, dense shale, limestone, or evaporitic rocks, depending on local geology. It develops through diagenetic cementation, mineral precipitation, and selective erosion that leaves a harder, more resistant layer atop softer rocks. Its thickness and composition vary greatly between basins and can range from a few centimeters to tens of meters.
