Canceling out is a general concept that describes the process where two or more things negate or eliminate each other, resulting in a net zero or a diminished effect. This can occur in various contexts, from mathematics and physics to social and cultural phenomena.

In mathematics, canceling out often refers to the simplification of expressions. For instance, in fractions, if a number or variable appears in both the numerator and the denominator, it can be canceled out, provided it is not zero. In physics, the principle of canceling out is evident in wave interference. When two waves meet, their amplitudes can combine. In consumer behavior, a positive review might be "canceled out" by a negative one, rendering the overall perception neutral.
