Calomelbased is an adjective used to describe substances, systems, or devices that incorporate calomel, or mercurous chloride (Hg2Cl2), or its derivatives. In science, the term is most often encountered in reference to calomel-based reference electrodes used in electrochemistry, notably the saturated calomel electrode (SCE).

Chemistry: Calomel is a sparingly soluble salt composed of the mercurous cation Hg2^2+ paired with chloride. In solid form it is Hg2Cl2; in solution it participates in the Hg2Cl2/Hg redox couple that sets the electrode potential. A calomel-based reference electrode contains Hg2Cl2 within a porous matrix and a chloride-rich electrolyte, typically saturated with KCl, to maintain a stable potential.

Applications: Calomel-based references are used to provide a stable reference potential in electrochemical measurements such as voltammetry, corrosion testing, and pH measurement workflows. The standard potential relative to the standard hydrogen electrode at 25 C is about +0.244 V for SCE, though exact values depend on chloride concentration and temperature. Mercury toxicity has reduced their popularity in some laboratories, prompting use of alternative references like Ag/AgCl.

Safety and regulation: Mercury compounds pose health and environmental risks. Handling requires appropriate containment, ventilation, and disposal as hazardous waste. Regulations sometimes restrict the use of calomel in consumer products and require special facilities for disposal.
