Researchers combine radiometric measurements with calendar anchors such as tree-ring sequences, inscriptions, historical chronicles, ice-core layer counts, and cultural typologies. By aligning these anchors with known calendar years, scientists produce a calendar age and an uncertainty interval. Uses and limitations: calendar age is essential for historical interpretation, artifact provenance, and chronology building in archaeology, paleontology, and related fields. Its accuracy depends on the quality and relevance of calendar anchors, the presence of corroborating evidence, and potential calendar reforms (for example, transitions between calendar systems). When anchors are sparse or conflicting, calendar ages are reported with broader ranges or lower confidence levels.
