Calcifieras is an informal term sometimes used to refer collectively to organisms and structures that produce calcium carbonate through biological processes. The word derives from Latin roots related to lime or limestone and calcification, and it is applied broadly rather than as a formal taxonomic category.

Calcifieras operate by biomineralization, precipitating calcium carbonate in forms such as calcite and aragonite either within cells or in extracellular matrices. Processes and strategies vary among groups: corals and coralline algae build external skeletons and crusts, mollusks and brachiopods form shells, and microscopic plankton like foraminifera and coccolithophores produce calcareous plates or tests.

Ecologically, calcifying organisms contribute to reef construction, sediment production, and long-term carbon cycling by transferring dissolved inorganic carbon into solid form. They provide habitat complexity, influence water chemistry locally, and serve as indicators in paleoclimate reconstructions because their hard parts can preserve environmental signals.

Calcifieras face threats from ocean acidification, rising temperatures, pollution, and habitat destruction, which can impair shell and skeleton formation and increase mortality. Conservation and research efforts focus on monitoring population and calcification rates, understanding physiological mechanisms, and developing management strategies to protect calcifying habitats.
