Caesarius is a Latin given name meaning “belonging to Caesar.” It has been borne by several medieval ecclesiastical figures, with two of the most notable being Caesarius of Arles and Caesarius of Heisterbach.

Caesarius of Arles (circa 470–542) was the bishop of Arles in Gaul. He is remembered for his role in reforming the Gallic church, promoting clerical discipline and pastoral care, and guiding monastic life in the region. He participated in local synods and is associated with the Council of Orange in 529, which dealt with questions of grace and free will. Caesarius was a prolific preacher, and his sermons and pastoral letters helped shape Gaul’s Christian practice during his tenure. He is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic tradition.

Caesarius of Heisterbach (late 12th to early 13th century) was a German Cistercian monk at Heisterbach Abbey on the Rhine. He is best known as the author of Dialogus Miraculorum (Dialogues on Miracles), a collection of miracle stories and moral anecdotes drawn from monastic life and popular piety. The work provides valuable insight into medieval spirituality, hagiography, and the everyday concerns of clergy and laypeople in the early thirteenth century. Caesarius’s writings contributed to the moral and devotional culture of his time.
