Bølgetilstande refers to the concept of wave states in physics, particularly in quantum mechanics. It describes how particles, such as electrons or photons, can exhibit wave-like properties. Instead of having a definite position and momentum simultaneously, a particle's state is represented by a wave function, often denoted by the Greek letter psi (ψ). This wave function contains all the probabilistic information about the particle.

The square of the magnitude of the wave function, |ψ|², at a particular point in space and time gives the probability density of finding the particle at that location. This probabilistic interpretation is a cornerstone of quantum mechanics, as introduced by Erwin Schrödinger. The evolution of these wave functions over time is governed by the Schrödinger equation.

Bølgetilstande are fundamental to understanding phenomena like wave-particle duality, quantum superposition, and quantum interference. For instance, in the double-slit experiment, particles behave like waves, passing through both slits simultaneously and creating an interference pattern on a screen, a direct consequence of their bølgetilstande.
