byssolite
byssolite is a layer - silicate mineral belonging to the montmorillonite group. Its chemical formula is typically Al₂Si₄O₁₀(OH)₂·nH₂O, similar to montmorillonite but with a distinct interlayer structure. It is commonly found in the shells of marine organisms such as oysters and clams, where it is secreted by these organisms to reinforce the shell structure. The mineral crystallizes in the monoclinic system, appearing as fine flaky or fibrous aggregates, usually white or light gray in color. Its hardness is low (around 2 - 2.5), and its density is about 2.0 - 2.3 g/cm³. In geology, byssolite is an important material for studying biomineralization processes. Due to its interlayer exchangeable cations, it has potential applications in soil improvement and adsorption fields. Although its natural distribution is relatively limited, it can be artificially synthesized through biomimetic mineralization techniques, which is useful for research in material science.
