burdekin

The Burdekin is a region in North Queensland, Australia, situated about 60 kilometres south of Townsville. It is named after Thomas Henry Burke, the second Governor of New South Wales. The area is characterised by its diverse geography, including the Burdekin River, the Great Dividing Range, and the extensive tablelands that cover much of the area.

The Burdekin River is the primary watercourse and provides a source of water supply for the region's agricultural industry. The region is also known for its extensive alluvial deposits, which have been mined for bauxite, coal, and precious gemstones such as opals.

The area has been inhabited by various indigenous groups, including the Wangan people, for thousands of years. The Burdekin Shire is the local government authority for the region and provides various services and amenities to the community. The region experiences a tropical savanna climate, with high temperatures and high rainfall during the wet season, and a dry season that runs from May to October.

There are a number of attractions in the region, including Babbington Rd, a scenic drive that runs through the Great Dividing Range, and the Burdekin River Ferry, which carries vehicles and passengers across the river. The area is also home to various golf courses, fishing spots, and parks and reserves that offer opportunities for outdoor recreation.
