Bullwort is dioecious, meaning individual plants are either male or female, a characteristic that distinguishes it from many other plants. The flowers are small and inconspicuous, with male flowers borne in terminal racemes and female flowers borne singly in the leaf axils.

Bullwort thrives in a variety of soil types, preferring moist, well-drained conditions. It is commonly found in cultivated fields, gardens, waste areas, and along roadsides. Its rapid growth and seed production contribute to its widespread distribution. Historically, the plant has been used in some traditional medicine practices, though its efficacy and safety are not widely recognized by modern science. In some areas, it is considered a noxious weed due to its ability to outcompete crops and its potential to cause irritation to livestock and humans upon contact.
