Bulgeja is a plant species belonging to the family Lamiaceae, scientifically designated as Bulgeja chinensis. It is indigenous to the subtropical montane regions of southern China, particularly in the provinces of Yunnan and Sichuan. The plant is characterized by its aromatic, oval foliage, pubescent stems, and bilabiate flowers that typically exhibit a pale lilac hue. Bulgeja typically grows in densely vegetated riparian zones at elevations ranging from 800 to 1,800 meters above sea level.

The species has been traditionally employed in Chinese materia medica to address a variety of ailments, including digestive disorders and respiratory infections. Active compounds isolated from the essential oil of Bulgeja include linalool, pinene, and camphor, which are attributed to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Modern pharmacological studies have investigated Bulgeja extracts for potential applications in developing novel anti‑inflammatory agents and topical antiseptics.

Bulgeja was first formally described in 1985 by botanist Dr. Xiaoqin Zhang in the China Journal of Botany. Subsequent taxonomic reviews have confirmed its distinct status within the Bulgeja genus, which contains no other species. Cultivation of Bulgeja is not common in commercial agriculture, although small‑scale horticultural projects in eco‑tourism zones in Yunnan have begun to propagate the plant for ornamental and medicinal use.

The conservation status of Bulgeja is currently listed as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, due to its relatively wide distribution and the lack of significant threats in its native habitats.
