The word buccaneer derives from the French boucanier, named for hunters who roasted meat on a boucan. The term entered English usage to describe Western Caribbean pirates and privateers who adopted similar methods and raiding patterns, crossing national and linguistic boundaries as they pursued plunder on the high seas.
