buccaneers
Buccaneers is a term associated with pirates and privateers who operated in the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Atlantic during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. These raiders attacked ships and coastal settlements, often with tacit support from provisional governments through letters of marque. They operated from bases such as Tortuga and Nassau and played a significant role in the so-called Golden Age of Piracy. Over time, sustained naval suppression and changes in maritime control diminished their influence, and by the 1730s piracy in the region had largely declined.
The word buccaneer derives from the French boucanier, named for hunters who roasted meat on a boucan.
