A brændstofdyse, commonly translated as fuel injector, is a crucial component in internal combustion engines. Its primary function is to precisely deliver fuel into the combustion chamber or intake manifold. Modern engines overwhelmingly utilize fuel injection systems over older carburetor technology due to their superior efficiency, performance, and emissions control.

The brændstofdyse operates by receiving pressurized fuel from the fuel pump and a controlled electrical signal from the engine control unit (ECU). Upon receiving this signal, the injector opens a tiny valve, allowing a finely atomized spray of fuel to be injected. The ECU determines the exact amount of fuel and the precise moment of injection based on various sensor readings, such as engine speed, throttle position, and air intake temperature. This precise control allows for optimal fuel-air mixture, leading to more complete combustion, reduced fuel consumption, and lower exhaust emissions.

There are several types of brændstofdyse systems, including port fuel injection (PFI) and direct injection (DI). In PFI systems, fuel is injected into the intake manifold just before the intake valve. In DI systems, fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber itself. Direct injection generally offers even greater efficiency and performance benefits. A malfunctioning brændstofdyse can lead to poor engine performance, rough idling, increased fuel consumption, and emission control issues.
