Bruttoavkastningen, or gross return, is a financial term representing the total earnings generated by an investment before any expenses or taxes are deducted. To calculate bruttoavkastningen, one starts with the initial investment amount and adds the total income and appreciation in value over a specific period. The difference between the ending value (including all income) and the initial investment represents the gross profit. This figure is then typically expressed as a percentage of the initial investment. For example, if an investment of 10,000 SEK grows to 11,000 SEK, with 500 SEK in dividends received, the total gain is 1,500 SEK. The bruttoavkastningen would be 1,500 SEK / 10,000 SEK = 15%.

It is crucial to distinguish bruttoavkastningen from nettoavkastningen, or net return. Nettoavkastningen accounts for all costs associated with the investment, such as management fees, transaction costs, and taxes. Therefore, bruttoavkastningen provides a picture of the raw profitability of an investment, while nettoavkastningen reflects the actual profit an investor receives after all expenses are paid.
