Bronchiában is a term that refers to the bronchi, which are the airways in the respiratory system that conduct air into the lungs. Specifically, the bronchi are the two large tubes that branch off from the trachea (windpipe) and lead to the lungs. These main bronchi, also known as the primary bronchi, further subdivide into smaller and smaller tubes within each lung, eventually leading to the bronchioles and then the alveoli where gas exchange occurs.

The walls of the bronchi are composed of several layers, including a mucous membrane, smooth muscle, and cartilage. The mucous membrane produces mucus, which traps inhaled particles like dust and pathogens. Tiny hair-like structures called cilia then beat rhythmically to move this mucus upward towards the throat, where it can be swallowed or coughed out, helping to keep the airways clear. The cartilage provides structural support, preventing the bronchi from collapsing during inhalation.

Bronchial conditions, such as bronchitis, involve inflammation of these airways. Bronchitis can be acute, often caused by viral infections, or chronic, a more long-term condition often associated with smoking or air pollution. Inflammation can lead to increased mucus production and narrowing of the airways, resulting in symptoms like coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. The health of the bronchi is crucial for efficient breathing and overall respiratory function.
