Bredning is the distance across an object or space, measured from one side to the opposite. It is a fundamental horizontal dimension and is often referred to as width in English. In Swedish, the standard term for this dimension is bredd; bredning is a less common or historical variant that can appear in older texts or regional usage. The concept is independent of length or height and is frequently considered together with those dimensions to describe a three‑dimensional form or a cross‑section.

It is used across many fields. In architecture and carpentry, bredning describes how wide a room, a beam, or an opening is. In textiles, it denotes the width of fabric. In geography and cartography, the term can appear in historical sources to indicate the width of features such as rivers or coastlines. In engineering, bredning influences cross‑sectional area and capacity, for example in roads, pipes, and channels.

Measurements are made in units such as meters, centimeters, or feet and inches. Common tools include tape measures, calipers, and laser rangefinders; for maps and digital data, bredning is derived from spatial datasets using geographic information systems. The breadth concept relates to area calculations (area equals bredning times length) and to aspect ratios (breadth divided by height).
