Bränsledamp refers to the gaseous state of fuel, typically liquid fuels like gasoline or diesel, when they evaporate. This evaporation occurs naturally due to the fuel's volatility, which is its tendency to vaporize at ambient temperatures. The process is influenced by factors such as temperature, air pressure, and the surface area of the liquid fuel exposed to the air.

When fuel evaporates, its molecules escape from the liquid phase and mix with the surrounding air. This mixture of fuel vapor and air can be flammable or explosive under certain conditions. The concentration of fuel vapor in the air determines the flammability range. Below a certain concentration, there is not enough fuel to burn, and above a certain concentration, there is not enough oxygen to support combustion. The range in between is where ignition can occur if an ignition source is present.

Controlling bränsledamp is important for several reasons. In automotive engines, fuel vapor is intentionally mixed with air to create a combustible mixture for combustion. However, uncontrolled evaporation from fuel tanks and systems can lead to air pollution and the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which contribute to smog formation. Modern vehicles are equipped with systems like evaporative emission control (EVAP) systems to capture and reduce these emissions.
