Botulismiin is a Finnish term referring to botulism, a rare but serious paralytic illness caused by toxins produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This bacterium thrives in low-oxygen environments and can be found in soil, dust, and improperly canned or preserved foods. Botulism is not contagious from person to person.

There are several types of botulism. Foodborne botulism occurs when people ingest food contaminated with the botulinum toxin. Infant botulism is the most common form in many countries and happens when infants ingest botulism spores, which then grow in their intestines and produce toxin. Wound botulism occurs when the bacteria infect a wound and produce toxin. In rare cases, iatrogenic botulism can result from accidental overdose of botulinum toxin used for cosmetic or medical purposes.

Symptoms of botulism typically appear within hours to days after exposure and can include blurred or double vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, and muscle weakness. As the toxin progresses, it can affect the respiratory muscles, leading to difficulty breathing and potentially respiratory failure, which is the most life-threatening aspect of the illness.

Diagnosis is usually based on clinical symptoms and confirmed by laboratory tests that detect the botulinum toxin in blood, stool, or food samples. Treatment involves administering an antitoxin, which can neutralize the toxin circulating in the bloodstream and prevent further nerve damage. Supportive care, such as mechanical ventilation, may be necessary for patients with respiratory compromise. Prompt medical attention is crucial for a favorable outcome. Prevention focuses on proper food handling and storage, particularly in home canning, and maintaining sterile conditions for medical or cosmetic injections.
